Skin
Skin is one of the most important things on our bodies that we try hard to keep in great shape. When it starts to get colder outside we start to enter the snake skin stage...not actually but you know the scaley dry skin that everyone tries to avoid.
Exfoliate: Yes lotion helps to combat this, but one of the most important steps for treating these scales is to exfoliate. Exfoliating gets off all of the dead skin cells (the scales) and allows your skin to breath again. Removing the dead skin also allows the products that you spend big $$ for to soak in and actually do their job. You can use either an exfoliating scrub (homemade or store bought), or what I prefer are exfoliating gloves. I love using gloves (which can be found at any local drugstore) because I can use my favorite body wash (Tree Hut Coconut Lime Shea Moisturizing Body Wash) and just massage it over my body with the gloves.
Moisturize: With the cold not only comes hot chocolate and warm fires, but also dry and cracked skin. Hopefully everyone knows how important for your skin it is to moisturize, but if you don't...IT IS SO IMPORTANT. Not using lotion not only leaves you looking dry and ashy, but also ages your skin faster. Slab on your favorite scented (or not scented) lotion when you are done with the shower, and for those who are morning showerers, also before you go to bed at night. I use Philosophy's Amazing Grace Firming Body Emulsion, which soaks in fast and leaves my skin feeling soft all day long.
To my sun bunnies: If you are like me and HATE being pale, but don't see the worth in damaging your skin by laying in tanning beds...then you should check out self tanner. I am a self tanner junkie and couldn't be more proud. It allows me to be tan in the winter without all the negative repercussions. Self tanners come in many different formulas including mousse, spray and lotions for different desired techniques. I have used all and really prefer to use a spray formula. This is the easiest in my opinion to apply, just spray all over your body or the desired area, and blend in with a tanning mitt. I use the Million Dollar Tan Icon Extreme spray and a mitt I bought from Ulta. For touch ups and to keep my tan fresh I also use the Cabana Tan Extreme Lotion. Self tanning isn't for everyone but it is a little thing that can make the world of the difference!
Hair
Halt!! Put down that sea salt spray and pick up that round brush! Unlike the summer with its texturized and beachy hair, fall and winter are all about smoothness. Seeing that our hair is naturally drier in the cold weather, texturizing sprays are not a necessity. Instead, oils and hair protectors are.
Protect: As we love our pin straight hair and sleek curls, we don't want to damage our hair more than we have to. Using a heat protectant is much more essential now than in the summer when you just let your hair free fall. Spray your heat protectant on before you blow dry your hair, (or if you let your hair air dry), before applying heat. I use the Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Protectant Spray.
Tame: Fall is the time we trade frizz for static. Instead of taming frizz we start to focus on not making us look like we got electrocuted every time we touch our hair. While Argan oil does tame frizz, it is also great for sleeking your hair and controlling static. I use the Nume Argan Oil, which is a bit pricy, but for an cheaper alternative check out Organix Argan Oil Put this just through the ends of your hair before styling. It will also act as another heat protectant and make your hair silky and super shiny.
Treat: I would never forget to mention a good hair mask! With our hair getting drier, or hair gets more vulnerable to damage. In order to help keep my hair silky and soft I like to use a deep conditioning mask once a week on my hair. I apply this in the shower in place of my conditioner and let it soak in for about 5-10 minutes. I use the Macademia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque, which lasts forever and is the best thing since sliced bread.
Nails
Nails
The air is starting to get crisp which means those nails deserve a manicure! I always find myself anxiously awaiting for seasons to change, mostly because, out come the new popular shades of nail color. But, we can't get too ahead of ourselves and focus all of our attention on the polishes (although, that is the exciting part) we have to remember to nourish those cuticles!
Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!: Very many of us forget all about our cuticles, and most of the time we are able to get away with it, especially in the summer. But my friends, summer has turned into the "been there done that" season of 2014, and it's time to face the cold weather. Due to the drop in temperature, our skin begins to crack and dry up, especially around our nail beds. The Orly Argan Oil Cuticle Drops nourish your cuticles and sets them up for healthy nail growth for the future. Once you have applied these drops, continue moisturizing your hands throughout the day and you will be all set for the fall and winter season!
Polish: In the summer we tend to lean towards the bright shades of pink, but wearing those colors in October just doesn't seem right. Now, during the fall season it does seem right to start wearing burnt shades of red and deep, deep purples. So I found two nail colors that I believe would look fantastic when gripped around a tall Pumpkin Spice Latte. The first color I fell in love with is Essie's Wicked which is a perfect mixture of dark purple and sinister red. This shade is so versatile that it will look great during the fall or winter! The next color that screams "fall time" is Essie's Macks. Macks is a ruby red color that looks more gloomy (in a good way!) each coat you put on. The key to having a perfect manicure is choosing the right shade for the right time.
XOXO,
Kendall & Kristen
